Why learn music with us?

Don’t just play music – read and write it too! While other schools may focus on mimicking simple songs, at Method to the Melody, we go beyond. We teach students how to read, write, and truly understand music, giving them the tools to create and express themselves confidently.

Method to the Melody is a growing music education program in the Bay Area. We believe that every student is uniquely designed to create, express, and grow through music. Serving a diverse student body throughout Contra Costa County, we offer high-quality private and group instruction across a variety of instruments.

Tuition for a given month is due in full by the 1st that month. With 24 hours notice you will receive a make-up credit for the following month, you can receive up to 1 credit per month. credits must be used within 30 days of the canceled lesson, Late notification of absence will not receive a credit. There can be no more than 1 credit in any given month. Notification of multi-week vacations must be at least 30 days in advance.
in the case of an emergency we understand and are here to help! Please send us a message and we can help sort out a credit for the following month.

General Information:

What Instruments do you teach? Many of our instructors are multi-instrumentalists. The more common the instrument, the more teachers and availability there will be for lessons on those instruments. So, Piano, Guitar, Bass, Drums, Trumpet, Violin, Saxophone, Ukulele, Flute, Trombone, are more common and have more availability. Whereas,  Cello, Double Bass, Euphonium, Piccolo Flute, etc…will have less availability and require more flexibility on both ends to find lesson slots for.

Do you teach beginners as well as advanced or adult students? We welcome all levels and ages!

Where are lessons held? We have multiple locations! Many are with local schools and academies and we also teach with public partners such as Rockin’ Robbie’s in both Concord and El Cerrito. Click either link to enroll now!

What styles of music do you teach? We teach nearly all styles of music including, Jazz, Blues, Rock, Pop, Folk, and Classical. Generally, lessons are personalized to the student to help them attain their goals. We also teach our students to read and write the music they are learning so that they are musically literate, which allows them to study any style of music in the future.

Scheduling & Attendance:

How do I sign up for lessons? We created a very easy, step-by-step process right here on this site to enroll in lessons with your choice of instructor, day, time and instrument. For lessons in Concord, click here. And for lessons in El Cerrito Click here. You will be walked through the entire process through  completion with all instruments, teachers and availability presented to you. If you don’t see an available teacher at a specific time you need, please message our team directly at 925-322-6555 and we will respond to you asap with our most aligned options.

What is your scheduling process? Once you have chosen an instructor, instrument, day and time through the process described above, your lessons will begin on your chosen date. Payment is processed on the first of the month and if your choose to begin after the first at any point during the month, your lessons for that month will be prorated. After the first lesson, should you discover the time, day, instrument or instructor are not a good fit for you (or your child) please message us directly at: 925-322-6555 and we will be happy to offer options that work best for you and your family.

How do I reschedule or cancel a lesson? Once you have created your account in the steps described above you have 24/7 access to make adjustments to you or your child’s schedule without having to get ahold of someone or wait for a reply. To cancel, log in and select cancel. If that is done with 24 hours notice before the lesson you are cancelling,  a credit will be automatically applied to your account to use within the next 30 days. To reschedule, you can select a time on your current teachers schedule and use that credit, OR as we offer Shared Make-Ups, you can select a day/time within any other instructors availability who teaches that instruments schedule.

What happens if I miss a lesson? If you forget, or simply cannot make a lesson and were not able to notify us within 24 hours before the lesson, we still must pay our instructors so the lesson is charged and a make-up is not applied to your account.

Do you offer make-up lessons? Yes! With 24 hours advance notice you can cancel your lesson within your account and a make-up credit will be automatically applied.

Will I always have the same teacher every time? In most (90%) cases the answer is yes! But our instructors are educators and as such are constantly seeking to enrich and educate themselves further, which means they may have a trip to another country or a 4-week course they have to attend to become even better teachers than they already are. That’s one thing our Shared-Make-Ups Program is there to do, support the students and provide consistency when our teachers are ready to grow.

Do I need to own an instrument before starting lessons? It’s best to have your own instrument to practice on at home, so bring whatever instrument you have currently to your first lesson. If it will work for the short-term, our instructors will let you know. If it will be difficult for the student to advance due to the current state or condition of the instrument, both of our public locations are inside music stores filled with student-level pricing on quality instruments for you to choose from, and we’re happy to guide you in choosing the right one for you or your child!
